Lion Royal Pony Trekking
Lion Royal Pony Trekking is based in Rhayader, seven miles from Penbont House. Trekking through the Elan Valley is a wonderful experience and enables you to see this wonderful place from a different perspective. Whether you have never ridden before or are experienced with horseback riding, Lion Royal Pony Trekking will provide you with an unforgettable adventure. Established in 1966, their horses are homebred, backed and schooled, with gentle and loving natures. Please note that their riding season is between May and October.
Gilfach Nature Reserve
Just 11 miles from Penbont House, this old hill farm near Rhayader has some wonderful nature trails rich with wildlife. You can explore the Nature Discovery Centre and learn more about the reserve. Watch salmon leap from a viewpoint beside the River Marteg or look out for otter in their purpose-built hide. There are plenty of picnic spots to sit and watch the meadowflowers sway in the wind and the rich variety of butterflies feed on the nectar. The walking trails are accessible for those in wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.
Pump Track Wales
Only eight miles from Penbont House, this split sprint pump track is a destination for those that love having fun on two wheels. There are tracks for all abilities and the best thing about it is that it’s completely free and open all year round!
Valley View Falconry
Only 12 miles from Penbont House, Valley View Falconry is a hidden gem for people of all ages to have a unique experience with handling birds of prey from around the world. You can spend a wonderful day among alpacas, pigs, horses, ponies, Shetlands, Guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, geese, budgies, lovebirds, degus, goats – the list goes on…!
When you stop for a well deserved break, the centre has a gift shop to browse in and provides refreshments.
Quackers Play Centre
Just 16 miles from Penbont House, Quackers Play Centre is a great option for all weathers and suitable for all ages. Situated near Llandrindod Wells, there are tube and drop slides, a ball pool, pedal go-karts, a nature walk around the lake and if you need refreshments, there is an onsite café.
Penbont House is situated in the heart of the Elan Valley International Dark Sky Park, so you don’t have to go far to enjoy our pristine, starry skies. In fact, you can enjoy dark skies from anywhere in the Cambrian Mountains! See the Milky Way arch majestically over the night sky in the Summer/Autumn and the magic of the winter night skies over a frosty landscape. You don’t need any equipment to get started; all you need are your eyes!
Gigrin Red Kite Feeding Centre
Only 8 miles from Penbont House, Gigrin Red Kite Feeding Centre is a great place to visit if you want to experience the breaktaking spectacle of hundreds of Red Kites soaring above you. This 160 acre farm near Rhayader feeds thousands of Red Kites every year and you can watch them from their specialist hides. For those who love photography, there are special, low built hides strategically placed so you can take some stunning photographs. With a coffee and gift shop, a farm trail and picnic sites you can happily spend an afternoon in some stunning countryside.
Bwlch Nant yr Arian Visitor Centre
An extremely scenic 23.5 miles from Penbont House, Bwlch Nant yr Arian Visitor Centre has something for all lovers of the outdoors. Whether it’s mountain biking, hiking, lakeside strolls, horseriding, running or watching Red Kites being fed, you will certainly enjoy the stunning scenery this dramatically beautiful location has to offer. Stop off at the Cafe and fuel up between adventures. And if that isn’t enough, Bwlch Nant yr Arian is also an easily accessible Dark Sky Discovery Site which makes it a truly galactic site for stargazing.
